Last, but not least, I want to address the foundation of North County Woman and what we represent. It appears there has been some confusion regarding the content of the magazine. In each issue, we try to provide a diversity of well-rounded information. We are a lifestyle magazine for women, and we work really hard to both entertain and inform each and every one of you. This magazine is a labor of love, and the goal is to share various topics written by various women (and the occasional man) with women throughout the County. We are not Vogue nor do we aspire to be; we are not a business journal nor do we aspire to be; and we are not perfect, although we always aspire to be! We are simply putting out a publication that many of you enjoy. If we inspire or even make one of you laugh, we have done our job. We hope that you enjoy this issue and continue to look forward to seeing us in your mailbox. Please remember to check out our website and like us on Facebook. Send us an email, and tell us how we’re doing! Cheers to all,

Cheers to the San Diego International Wine Show! PHOTOGRAPHY BY DENISE VAKILI

It’s no surprise that great wines come from European countries, but it may be shocking to learn that the Vatican City in Italy ranks as the highest country for wine consumption in Europe, according to The Wine Institute of California. They apparently drink more than one and a half times as much wine per person as any other country in the world. Italy, itself, ranks 11th on the list and the United States ranks 56th on that same list for the year 2012–drinking 10.42 liters, slightly under 14 bottles, per capita. Italian-born Donato Santarsieri is the Executive Director of the San Diego International Wine Show and comes from a long history of family winemakers in Italy. Santarsieri introduced San Diego wine consumers to the international flavors of wine from around the globe at the show held in April in the Del Mar Paddock at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. “The public here is generally quite California-centric about their taste in wine, but when they travel abroad and experience these fantastic wines they’re discovering that they really like them,” says Santarsieri. But the problem is many people don’t know how or where to find the wines that they experienced overseas. “I saw this as a great opportunity to bring in international wines, winemakers, and top sommeliers to let consumers taste and learn more about what makes these wines so special,” says Santarsieri. The two-day wine lovers extravaganza featured international wines from Italy, Spain, France, Chile and Argentina, and, even closer to home, Baja Wines from the Guadalupe Valley region of Baja California, Mexico. It’s an emerging market and wine country that several years ago had fewer than 10 wineries. Today, there are 93 wineries in Baja. Certified Sommeliers Charlie Plummer of Jackson Family Fine Wines and Hilarie Larson (Certified Specialist Of Wine 2012) gave educational talks with question and answer sessions, including seminars on “Blind Tasting Secrets Of The Sommelier” and There’s No Place Like Rhone.” The show featured live music from Jimmy and Enrique, as well as Susan McCrea with Soul Seduction. Cooking demonstrations were provided by Guatemala-born Chef Pablo A. Fernandez, founder/producer of The Secret Table, a movement to bring community around real food and true relationships.

DIY (Do It Yourself) and Estate Planning... A Cautionary Tale BY BECCA FLETCHER

PEOPLE ASK ME ALL THE TIME, “DO I REALLY NEED AN ATTORNEY TO HELP ME PREPARE MY ESTATE PLAN?” The answer is a resounding YES. Here are a couple of examples of how DIY and Estate Planning do not mix. You Don’t Really Know Someone Until You’ve Had to Share an Inheritance with Him/ Her

One of the primary objectives of creating an estate plan is to preserve family harmony after you are gone. Stories of siblings who no longer speak to one another as a result of actions, or misinterpretation of actions, by their parents and grandparents are all too common in the field of estate and trust planning. Decisions such as whom to select as a trustee or executor in your estate plan can be of crucial importance in preserving your family harmony after you are gone. The advice of an experienced estate planning attorney to help you select a trustee and discuss your options is truly invaluable.

home. Initially it seemed as though John really had outsmarted the system. It wasn’t until John’s son tried to sell the home that he realized that his father had done him a great dis-service in being a do-it-yourself estate planner. You see, when a beneficiary inherits a house, either through the probate or under transfer from the trustee of a living trust, that beneficiary takes the property with what is known as a stepped-up cost basis. This means that when the beneficiary sells the assets, any capital gains tax due on the sale is calculated from the value of the asset at the date of the death of the transferor. On the contrary, when a person is given an asset, such as when John added his son to the title to his home, that person takes the asset with the cost-basis of the grantor.

You May Think You’ve Outsmarted the System Until It’s Too Late

So in our example, John purchased the home he gave to his son for $200K in 1980, but the home was worth $700K at his death. When John’s son tried to sell the house, he realized that he had to pay approximately $100K in capital gains tax (20% of the $500K gain). All of this tax could have been avoided with proper planning.

Consider the story of John who was a classic Do-It-Yourself-er. John became terminally ill from cancer in his late 60s and he had yet to do any proper estate planning. However, he only had one son and he wanted everything to go to him. John did not want to spend the money on an estate plan. He had read enough to know that if he re-titled his home to add his son to title that his son would own the home outright after his death without even going through probate. Well he was right. John died and in the blink of an eye, his son owned the

Again, stories of what could go wrong and what did go wrong without proper guidance are all too plentiful in the field of estate planning. And perhaps the worst part of these stories is that by the time you realize planning was poorly done, it’s often too late to repair the damage. By consulting an experienced estate planning attorney to do your estate plan now, you’ll have peace of mind knowing that you have done all you can do to preserve family harmony and ease the transition of assets when you’re gone.

Best Weekend Getaways BY MEGAN ARTERBERRY

ROMANTIC WEEKEND GETAWAY: CATALINA ISLAND Just over an hour by boat from Dana Point, Catalina is a small island with 76 square miles. The quaint, scenic harbor town of Avalon has a dramatic backdrop of mountains and canyons protected by the nature conservancy. The island is popular for hiking, biking, and water sports with a variety of tours offered for these activities. Where to Stay: Aurora Hotel & Spa A new cozy, chic, petite boutique hotel offering rooms and a rooftop lounge with stunning views of Avalon Bay. Just up the hill from the water, it’s in short walking distance to all the shops and restaurants. A warm, helpful staff makes for a comfortable stay. Local massage therapist, Lavina Jones, offers wonderful massages in their Spa Room — a great way to soothe tired muscles after a hike!

BEST WEEKEND GETAWAYS

What to Do: Day Hikes The Memorial Garden combines beautiful nature, stunning sea views, and impressive architecture with a looped trail at the back; this is a great spot for a picnic lunch. The trails on the outskirts of the Airport show you some of the harder to reach “interior” nature of the island (round-trip shuttles offered). To get around town, a golf cart or bike rental is a fun way to see the sights. Where to Eat: CC Gallagher and Villa Portofino CC Gallagher offers two of my favorite cuisines, Mediterranean and Japanese. With specialty and artisan offerings along with a Japanese Chef for their sushi rolls, it is a great spot for any meal of the day. Villa Portofino is a local favorite. They are revered for their seafood, often fresh, locally caught, and offer a great Tiramisu dessert.

What to Pack: Workout attire and backpack Bring layers to accommodate weather changes, such as a tee, pullover, and fleece jacket. Comfortable athletic shoes are essential, and a lightweight backpack allows you to carry necessities hands-free. To polish up for dinner, simply pair an easy jersey dress with comfortable sandals or ballet flats and a clutch. Tip: To be more comfortable during the boat ride, bring a small, chilled bottle of sparkling water and try some ginger chews. My favorite shop in Avalon, Bay of the Seven Moons, sells ginger chews for your return boat ride.

BEST SOLO GETAWAY: THE OAKS AT OJAI, “AMERICA’S BEST SPA VALUE” In Ventura County, the scenic city of Ojai is tucked in the majestic beauty of rolling hills, oak trees, and mountains; the perfect spot for a peaceful retreat. Ojai is a truly a gem, vibrant in arts and culture and producing fine wines, olive oils, lavender, and pixie tangerines. The Oaks at Ojai sits in town amongst art galleries and boutiques. It is one of the top ranked spa resorts in the nation, and well deserved. Prized for good value, The Oaks is a quality, all-inclusive destination spa where you can easily and comfortably go solo for a rejuvenating retreat. With an exceptional staff, friendly guests (mostly women, and many solo), an inspiring fitness program, healthy spa cuisine, comfortable rooms with a hacienda feel, and relaxing spa facilities, it’s understandable why many guests return to The Oaks again and again, year after year. Fitness: Start your day with either a guided hike on a beautiful nature trail or a guided walk through the charming town of Ojai, either being the perfect start to your day. After breakfast, a morning stretch class reminds you how vital stretching is and how good it feels. Break for a nourishing vegetable broth and continue with a cardio dance class! It will make you feel ten years younger by putting the biggest smile on your face and reminding you exercise should be fun, not a chore! After lunch (and maybe a siesta), take a dip in the heated outdoor pool with views of the majestic mountains. The aqua toning class is a safe and gentle way to lift weights and tone up. Take a break and enjoy a fruit smoothie, then relax in the spa facilities to soothe your post-workout muscles. After dinner, enjoy a workshop, such as a fun art class, or get a relaxing massage. Head back to your room and have some of the best sleep you’ve had in a while. Food: All meals are included and are wonderful. Some highlights include

their warm muffins with local jam for breakfast (locals come in to buy their muffins by the dozen to take home), frittata and salad for lunch, and grilled chicken with wild rice and kale for dinner. All meals are healthy and balanced. Vegetarian options are also available, such as quinoa and stir fried veggies. Spa: Unwind after a workout with an indoor or outdoor jacuzzi soak and a steam or dry sauna. The perfect way to end your day is with a massage, such as their Sweet Slumber Massage featuring local lavender, which is heaven. Check out their salon and try a makeup application using Jane Iredale mineral makeup, it feels so light on the skin. What to Pack: Workout attire, fleece jacket, athletic shoes, swimsuit, flops, cover-up, water bottle, and casual wear. What to Bring Home: The Farmers’ Market on Sundays is not to be missed, especially for the local lavender artisanal products: lavender honey, lavender essential oil, and lavender soap. A bottle of local wine, such as the Ojai Vineyard Grenache, makes a nice souvenir. From The Oaks boutique, get some “Oaks’ Chocolate Spa Bark” and enjoy with a glass of wine. Get a workout DVD and a spa music CD to bring some of the magic of The Oaks home with you.

 Etiquette | WEDDINGS

Wedding Etiquette: Be the Best Guest

BY ANDIE BEYER GREEN, HOLLY'S GIRLFRIEND PHOTOGRAPHED BY AMORE WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY

“Mawage. Mawage is wot bwings us togeder tooday. Mawage, that bwessed awangment, that dweam wifin a dweam… And wuv, tru wuv ...” –The Impressive Clergyman, The Princess Bride (1987) YOU’VE BEEN INVITED TO A WEDDING. Ideally, you have received the wedding invitation and it’s between six and eight weeks before the big day. You are looking forward to attending, so mail the response card immediately. Then start thinking about the arrangements, attire and gift.

The Response Card Feel free to write a nice note on the response card or if there is no response card, send a note to accept the invitation. If a guest is invited with you, include his or her name on the response card. If you have children who are invited, their names will be listed or they will receive their own invitations. If you question that a mistake has been made about including a guest or children, think again. Guest numbers can be difficult to manage and the invitation is most likely correct. Including the names of guests or children on the response might elicit a perfectly appropriate phone call from the bride or groom to inform you that the uninvited guests noted are not invited.

Travel Arrangements Generally, the bride and groom send information or have a website dedicated to helping guests with hotels and transportation. There is no obligation to stay at these hotels, but if you do want to be part of the wedding party hotel room block, book your room as quickly as possible so that the hotel can accommodate you.

Choosing A Wedding Gift The budget and relationship guide the gift choice, not the cost per seat at the wedding. • There is no obligation to buy a registry gift • Cash is acceptable • It’s easier for the bride and groom if you send a gift directly to their home so that they don’t have to track it • It is appropriate to send the gift around the wedding date (it is a myth that a gift may be sent within a year) • Shower, engagement, and other pre-party gifts do not qualify as wedding gifts Enjoy being part of the special event and helping the bride and groom make a meaningful memory.

“All weddings, except those with shotguns in evidence, are wonderful.” –Liz Smith, gossip columnist If you have an etiquette question or an article idea please email: andie@hollysgirlfriend.com.

The Rehearsal Dinner You may be invited to the rehearsal dinner, particularly if you are a close relative. It is not a requirement to include out-oftown guests.

What To Wear Weddings provide an excellent opportunity to dress nicely. The time of the event, words like “black tie” and “formal”, the venue and the wedding couple themselves are guides for attire. For the men, a dark suit is an easy choice, unless it is black tie and a tuxedo is owned. For the ladies: Formal: Evening weddings are frequently formal. A long evening gown or dressy cocktail dress is appropriate. Daytime or Informal: A non-cocktail dress or a dressy sundress is generally appropriate for a daytime wedding. A hat can be a lovely addition in the afternoon. Color: Black is fine as long as it doesn’t look like something you’d wear to a funeral. White is okay if it doesn’t in any way look like a wedding dress. Refrain from jeans and casual hats, skimpy clothing (particularly when the service is religious) and athletic or casual shoes.

Weaning Yourself From Demeaning Spring Cleaning! BY STEPHANIE LEWIS

Stephanie Lewis

Stephanie Lewis, mother of six, hopes your spring-cleaning is less adventurous than hers! Find more of her unique female humor at TheQuotegal.Wordpress.com Reach Stephanie for your freelance writing needs at TheQuotegal@ yahoo.com

SOME LADIES MAGAZINES DO A COLUMN, “WHAT’S INSIDE A CERTAIN CELEBRITY’S DESIGNER BAG?” It usually features “subtle” product placement advertising - - so you too can look just like the actual movie star! At North County Woman, we know better than to believe that carrying an expensive keychain like Jennifer Aniston will have you carrying her gorgeous figure too. But today, in honor of Spring-Cleaning (Whoever thought that concept up had far too much time on HIS hands!) I have decided to go through my own five lb. Target special shoulder bag. But why stop there??

Spill It: What's in Your Bag? Checking out my bag today, what the heck’s in my purse? Wouldn’t it be all the more fun to describe it in verse? There’s lipstick, mascara, liner, & crumbly pink blush, Chewing gum and breath mints when eating onions in a rush. Saltine Crackers and single-serve apples, pummeled to mush, And a stray tampon in packaging marked, “Please Do Not Flush.” So where’s the Gift Cards, the Visas, and all the cold, hard cash? Just a few coins, wrinkled tissues, and some creme for diaper rash. That’s kinda funny, when my “baby” is old enough to curse. But just when I think my rummaging can’t get too much worse . . . Oy! From a funeral yesterday, there’s a business card for a hearse?! Moving on to my kitchen, what’s going down in my Fridge? Aside from greenish Provalone (but hey, that’s just a smidge!) Besides, I assert to my family, if the truth were to be told… Where do you think cheese comes from, if not from a bunch of mold? On the Top Shelf, you can see “Top Chef” has obviously been fired, Hardened Kraft macaroni (and more cheese!) leaves little to be desired. Oh wait! He wasn’t laid-off – - he tossed his white puffy hat and promptly retired. After all, what’s left to prepare when even the eggs and the butter have expired? In the produce drawer, (like my purse!) lives an apple, but I use the term loosely, Let’s just say there’s no need for a blender in this house to get our fruit “juice-ly!” Tupperware = the Fun Family Game, “Guess What Grows in Here for Your Dinner?” Who needs Weight Watchers? This is the most effective way for us to get thinner. One last look at my freezer’s contents, and I turned and sweetly smiled, “We’re eating out tonight, kids – - next life you should be born to Julia Child.” But just when I thought it was safe for us to pile in behind the wheel, Under the passenger’s side, I find part of a McDonald’s Happy Meal. Now my mother’s instinct kicks in - I should probably take another peek… And lo and behold, out rolls a carton of yogurt and it’s actually Greek! But I ask you, what else would you expect from a woman this chic?!? In the seat pockets are napkins, cups and silverware galore, Ketchup packs, soda cans and french-fries litter the car floor. In the glove compartment, see those Kabob remnants broiled over flame? I’ll tell you, this gourmet vehicle really put my refrigerator to shame. So I crank up the Bee-Gees and flicker on and off the interior light. “Welcome to Mom’s Disco” I shout, “We’re eating in the Toyota tonight!”

Featured Woman

elena FHanson The Goddess of Shared Workspace for Women

BY KERRY WRIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY BY DENISE VAKILI

WALKING INTO HERA HUB IS VERY MUCH LIKE WALKING INTO A SPA; HOWEVER, THIS SPA OFFERS SHARED WORKSPACE FOR FEMALE ENTREPRENEURS. Beautifully hung art, living plants, candles, water features, and even coffee, tea, and snacks are just a few of the tranquil amenities available to members who choose to make this ultra-Zen space their office. More importantly, it offers cost-effective, professional space to meet with clients and to connect and collaborate with like-minded business owners. It’s brilliant and oh-so-appealing for the woman who needs a break from her home office and a little female inspiration. My take? It’s a breeding ground for success! As I toured Hera Hub, I couldn’t help but notice several women clicking away on their computers like thousands of other working women across the world; however, these women looked relaxed and actually happy to be working! I quickly came to the conclusion that this was far more than just shared workspace in a really cool environment; it’s a community. A community of women who all share the same goal—to succeed. When I sat down to interview Felena Hanson, the founder of Hera Hub, I found her to be warm and engaging. She was a pleasure to speak with and it’s no wonder she’s successful. She is a woman’s woman, and by that I mean that she gets the dynamic of today’s businesswoman. Behind the kind smile is an individual who is determined to change the plight of the entrepreneurial woman who works from home and longs to be a part of something bigger. I’m curious to learn more about Felena and this incredible space she has created. But, first, I need to know how she came up with the name of her business and why peacocks seem to be something she favors. There are pictures of peacocks and even a peacock-looking chair in the office. I also notice she is wearing a peacock necklace…I’m intrigued! NCW: Explain to our readers how you chose the name Hera Hub? FH: Hera is the Greek goddess of women and she was said to be very watchful over women in every stage of their lives—guarding and protecting them. Initially, I was drawn to the Greek goddess Athena for knowledge and wisdom and that’s what spurred the idea of looking to Greek goddesses for a name. I wanted something that spoke to women, but wasn’t overly feminine. I researched the goddesses and what I liked about Hera is the meaning behind the name. I’m a marketing girl, so everything about marketing and branding is important; it needs to have meaning and tell a story. I thought Hera was fitting in that she was a guardian/protector of women, and hub is a place where everything comes together so to speak.

North County Woman Spring/Summer 2014 | 15

Featured Woman What I didn’t find out until about two months after I chose the name Hera Hub was that the symbol for the name Hera is a male peacock feather. If you Google Hera, you will notice that there is often a peacock in pictures with her. The irony of that is that I grew up in San Luis Obispo on a couple of acres and we had pet peacocks. Every fall the peacock would shed its feathers, and I would collect them and take them down to the corner store and sell them for a dollar a piece. At 8-years old my first entrepreneurial venture was selling peacock feathers! After the discovery of Hera and her connection to peacocks, it was almost as if I had come full circle. It was neat for me to actually tie my first entrepreneurial venture into my current entrepreneurial venture. It sort of served as affirmation for me that I was on the right path! NCW: Wow! What a great, amazing story! The irony of the peacock is fascinating and it lends such meaning to your story. FH: Yes, everything we do here, the brand, how we position things has meaning. It has to have meaning because people don’t buy “things” anymore; they buy stories and try to identify with those stories. As you know I have my story on our website, and I was featured in the New York Times. I am a very open book because it’s my story! It’s important for me to say this is what has happened to me, but it doesn’t define who I am. We’ve all been through things, but it’s how you recover and move on that defines who you are. (Read more about Felena’s story at herahub.com/team/our-team/) NCW: When you first started thinking about shared workspace for women, what was your initial vision? FH: I still have the original vision board that I created about a year before Iaunching the business! All of the images on that board are of women collaborating, supporting each other, connecting, and that’s really what the business is. It’s a supportive platform, and I use that word a lot because it’s an important word to me. Much of the content, education and things that we offer aren’t pushed by us; it’s us providing a platform for our members to be able to share their expertise with the community. We build a really strong, beautiful platform and make sure we’re supporting and creating a nurturing environment that will let them really shine. NCW: Has Hera Hub turned out exactly as you had envisioned or are there areas of the plan you’re still working on? FH: Oh, you’re always tweaking as a business owner. Learning new things every day. I have really high expectations, and I have to say that it has exceeded my expectations so that’s saying a lot! In interviews I often get asked the question “what has most surprised you about the business?” I would have to say, in a single word, accountability. It makes sense because if you take a person out of the corporate

SPRING/SUMMER 2014

"Believe in yourself! WOMEN ARE SMART…

WE CAN FIGURE IT OUT." structure where they have superiors and people they’re managing and colleagues and they’re a part of a system, and you take that person out of the system, move them to a spare bedroom, by themselves, there’s no system anymore. You don’t have to answer to anyone and if you want to do something you do it! It’s exciting, but often times as a business owner if it’s not on fire it’s easy to push it to the back burner because nobody is there telling you it has to be done. It’s a big shift to go from a system to being solo and accountable for your own business. Prior to launching Hera Hub, I had my own marketing business for eight years and worked out of my spare bedroom. The isolation, having a hard time focusing, and wanting to feel like I was a part of something but still wanting to be my own boss was truly the impetus for starting Hera Hub. I wanted to work for myself, but not by myself. Hera Hub defines exactly what I was looking for—a platform with structure; a creative environment where I could collaborate and bounce ideas off of another person, but still be in control of my own business; and utilizing the space for some accountability. In fact, over the last six months we have been implementing more of the accountability factor because our members have asked for it. In December, we did a one-week challenge where members came in at 10:00am on Monday, set three goals to accomplish that week, and on Friday at 2:00pm they had to show up (and we were nudging them throughout the week) and show us what they had completed that week. It sounds simple, but with all of the demands of being a woman, a mother, a community member, it’s often times we put other priorities before the things we really need to do in our business to make it successful. Or maybe it’s just the things that you don’t really want to do. For example, not a lot of our members had done financial projections for their businesses. We provided the structure and guidance, as well as strategy sessions and one of our labs (we call them Hera LABS) to help them take the first steps in creating their financial projections. Although there are a lot of great organizations out there that provide low-cost seminars and free counseling, I think women are looking for more than a one-day mentor. They really want to be in an environment where they can bounce ideas off of one another, get some feedback, and feel supported when bringing an idea to market. We offer all of that in addition to office space. NCW: Can you explain Hera LABS? FH: Siliva Mah, the founder of Hera-Labs created a business accelerator for female entrepreneurs where we Help Entrepreneurs Rapidly Accelerate (H.E.R.A.). We offer quick-start action-oriented workshops in a small group

setting for ideation and growth stage companies. This practical, hands-on approach allows a founder to either evaluate a new concept, build a marketing action plan, or set their course for maximum productivity in the upcoming year Our signature program is the Idea Potential LAB where we flesh out a new business idea, including projections and pitch in just 16 hours. Our alumni span from women developing apps to those creating consumer products and service-based businesses. Over the past 2 years, we have had 100 women attend our labs, workshops and accountability groups to launch a new venture or accelerate their existing companies. We focus on supporting those who target timely profitability vs. venture funding. While these businesses are not as coveted or “shiny and bright”, they are the engines of our economy. NCW: Was there ever a time when you thought about quitting and not pushing forward with the business? If so, what propelled you forward? FH: I never felt like quitting because I don’t think that way, but I can’t say there weren’t feelings of frustration and doubt along the way. In the beginning it was challenging to secure space. I had two failed lease negotiations within six months and, of course, I began to wonder if I were meant to do this business. Finally, the third time was the charm and we secured our first space in Sorrento Mesa. It was then that things were reaffirmed for me. There are challenges every day, but I don’t see them as roadblocks, I see them as speed bumps. NCW: I’m sure women business owners ask for your business advice often. In your opinion, what do you think is the most important piece of advice you give to them? FH: Believe in yourself! Women are smart…we can figure it out. I think women are perfectionists and, unfortunately, we are really good at doubting ourselves. I go back to the whole scenario of sticking a woman in her spare bedroom that is trying to start a business and it’s really easy for her to doubt herself when she doesn’t have any support. I know a lot of women suffer from what’s called “the imposter syndrome”—feeling like you’re faking it. I hear it from women all of the time. Because you’re not getting the connection of community and support, you doubt yourself. I have women who are members and say they come in to recharge. The atmosphere here is contagious and it reboots their confidence because they see other women doing

Featured Woman sounding board for them. I’m also a good diplomat, and I think that comes from having been the conduit between my parent’s bitter divorce and then blending with new stepsiblings. Again, I’m a good listener and that allows me to have a diplomatic approach to most things. NCW: What is one thing people would be surprised to learn about you? FH: Probably a lot of things! I’d say a quirky/interesting fact about me is something that I’m doing currently, which is dancing at pop-up nightclubs! I love to dance, but I don’t really fit into the club scene anymore. So some girlfriends and I (we’ve done it twice now) take a stereo, set up on the sidewalk, like in downtown San Diego or North Park, and have a dance party with each other and people walking by. Our last event was done in support of a woman who owns a small café called Marie’s Café. We set up our dance party in front of her business, videotaped it, and shared her story. It was a great way to bring some attention to her business and sort of put her on the map while having fun. Life is too short to not have fun! From an adversity angle, I’ve been through a lot. Three layoffs by the age of 30; hit by a fire truck at age 22 which resulted in 27 broken bones in my arms, legs, and face. I had to spend time in a wheelchair and have multiple surgeries. After that accident, I really came to believe that I was here for a reason. I have made it my goal since then to figure it out, and I think I’m getting close to my answer! NCW: What defines a perfect day for you? FH: Interaction, connecting, supporting, helping. Being a resource. I get no better gratification from life than connecting people who need to know each other! NCW: Is there anything that I didn’t ask you about in this interview that you’d like for our readers to know?

the same thing and making it happen! Hera Hub is very much equal parts quiet, productive workspace as it is a sense of community and camaraderie. It helps remind women that they can do it! NCW: Where would like to see Hera Hub in five years? FH: After building three successful locations in San Diego County, my next goal is to support over 20,000 women globally in the launch and growth of their business via 200 Hera Hub locations over the next 5 years. I really want to redefine the stigma that women don’t support each other in the business environment. It really makes me upset to hear women say they used to work in the corporate environment for a woman and it was a terrible experience. They complain of the backstabbing and that they’d rather work for a man. It’s sad and I’m out to change that! NCW: We, as women, are often too critical of ourselves. What do you like most about yourself? FH: I like that I’m a connector and diplomatic. I’m very good at listening to someone, hearing their need, and being able to connect them to someone else who could help them or at least be a solid

18 | North County Woman Spring/Summer 2014

FH: Actually, yes. Sometimes I’ll hear through the community grapevine the misperception of the types of businesses that are a part of Hera Hub. We’re here rooting for the little gal. We’re here to support, as we say, original ideas and people who don’t have a huge team behind them. We support the business owner who is developing her own product or service that needs and wants the support of the community. NCW: In conclusion of this interview, what words of wisdom do you have for other women out there who want to follow their dreams? FH: Just do it! Find support in community. You have to be able to know that there is support out there and you don’t have to do it alone. NCW: As a new, small business owner myself, interviewing Felena was inspiring. She is a woman who saw a need for other women and went out and created her dream for them. I am a woman who saw the need for a lifestyle magazine for our local women and started one. We all have the capability to dream, but what you do with that dream is up to you. Fortunately, our community has some awesome women’s networking groups as well as a place like Hera Hub to find the support and encouragement every woman needs. Having the fortitude to go solo is always a big step, but it just may be the most rewarding step you ever take! You won’t know if you don’t try!

& Refreshed? FILL ME UP!

BY AMERICA DASCHLE DIRECTOR OF REJEUVINÉ MEDSPA

WANT TO LOOK YOUR BEST? Dermal fillers are the perfect tools for achieving just that. Implemented correctly, dermal fillers can instantly help you look refreshed, more youthful, and accentuate your favorite features in a way that looks natural and not overdone. Dermal fillers are a great anti-aging treatment with such versatility. A few uses for dermal fillers include: building up your cheekbones for an instantly more youthful look; filling in the smoker’s lines around your mouth; plumping up your lips for a sexy pout; eliminating the bags under your eyes to look refreshed; or adding volume to your hands to reduce crepiness. You can add a little or you can add multiple syringes to achieve a ‘liquid face lift’ — no cutting required!

DERMAL FILLERS

Dermal fillers like Restylane, Perlane, Juvederm, and Voluma are made of hyaluronic acid, a water molecule that can hold up to 1,000 times its weight and naturally exists in our bodies. Once injected it can last six to nine months depending on the area. Lips, which are more vascular and are constantly being used, tend to break down the hyaluronic acid a little faster than filler placed in the temples which can last up to a year.

Real People Real Solutions Botox/Dysport | Dermal Fillers Laser Treatments | Medical Facials Dr. Michael J. Brucker Board Certied Plastic Surgeon

A private study done by a doctor who tested the effects of filler via biopsies revealed that after injecting hyaluronic acid over years, the body tended to create more collagen thus causing the dermal filler to last longer and longer. This made perfect sense to me, because for the past ten years, I have injected my lips every six to eight months. Two years ago, I stopped due to a pregnancy, and I haven’t needed to inject them since! I still have nice, full, shapely lips! Although this treatment causes a slight bit of discomfort, the outcome is well worth it! In addition, most dermal fillers contain Lidocaine thus further reducing any potential discomfort. Hyaluronic acid dermal filler treatments can be reversed by injecting hyaluronidase/wydase, but this should only be used as a last resort. I always recommend waiting for at least two weeks after the procedure to allow for all the swelling to dissipate, as it may obstruct the results. Side effects of injecting dermal fillers may include swelling and bruising; however, I feel these are the only downsides to fillers and, to be honest, I love the swelling! We’ve discovered that bruising is more common in patients who have been taking aspirin, fish oil, or a Vitamin E supplement (Vitamin E in a multivitamin has no effect). We advise clients to stop taking them two weeks prior to receiving their dermal filler. Blood thinners can also increase your chances of bruising. Be sure to consult with your physician before stopping them. At Rejeuviné MedSpa, we have some tricks of the trade to help reduce bruising, such as taking Arnica Montana, an all-natural supplement, which helps the healing process. If you do bruise, Rejeuviné offers a complimentary Laser Genesis specialty treatment. The heat from the laser treatment helps break up the bruise, allowing you to heal quicker. Voluma is the hottest and latest dermal filler on the market, and we are very excited to have it in our hands. It was developed for the mid-cheek area and we have been seeing amazing results. It lifts the cheeks and the jowls, opens up the eyes, and immediately gives an overall more youthful look. The study done for Voluma shows it can last up to two years, which is a game changer for the dermal filler industry. The injectors we have on staff are thrilled with the results they are seeing, as are our clients! Dermal fillers are an exciting aesthetic option to help you look your best, so I encourage you to get a consultation to see what they can do for you!

10 GREAT

Things You Can Do for Your Brain BY MARTI AVILA

WHAT DO LAUGHING, BEING RICH, FORGETTING THE LYRICS OF A SONG, BEING HEALTHY, AND FINDING YOUR DEODORANT IN THE REFRIGERATOR HAVE IN COMMON? They all involve your brain. Every decision, every thought, every action is first conceived in your brain, so it is fairly easy to figure out how your brain is working. Your brain is at the center of everything you do, all you feel and think, and every nuance of how you relate to people. If you are happy, wealthy, healthy, calm and productive, chances are you have a good, healthy working brain. If not, chances are your brain could use some help.

WHAT CAUSES YOUR BRAIN TO WORK BADLY? Being that you cannot see your brain, most people take it for granted. Unlike skin or other parts of your body whose conditions are obvious in a mirror, no one really thinks about their brain or how extremely fragile it is. THINGS THAT CAN AFFECT YOUR BRAIN: • Head traumas, such as hitting your head in a fall, being hit in the head, bumping it hard, etc. • Emotional traumas like an abusive childhood/ relationship, rough military involvement, etc. • Over use of drugs, alcohol, and other toxins. • Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). • A lengthy amount of bad eating habits: after all, your body makes its brain chemistry in the small intestines. As mentioned in the bullet list above, your eating habits allow you to see how your food IMMEDIATLEY affects your thinking. This will help you to determine whether your diet is helping or hurting your brain. Symptoms can manifest immediately or years later as anger, success, forgetfulness, making good decisions, depression, courage, fear, rage, happiness, etc., and rarely are the traumas and the behaviors associated. THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT YOU CAN GREATLY IMPROVE YOUR BRAIN. There are many scientifically proven things you can do to help your brain. A brain-healthy diet and lifestyle include taking special supplements specifically formulated for the brain, such as a high-quality, highdose fish oil; relaxation techniques; connecting with a higher power (spirituality); being nice to others; soft-belly breathing; specific brain-type exercises;

neurofeedback; and, of course, the granddaddy of them all: Brain SPECT Imaging. Brain SPECT Imaging consists of taking a picture of your brain to determine what parts of your brain are or aren’t working. The areas of the brain that aren’t working can be treated through various techniques such as those listed above to restore full brain activity resulting in a healthy, more complete way of living. HERE ARE 10 SIMPLE THINGS THAT YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW TO IMPROVE YOUR BRAIN FUNCTION: 1. List five things that you are grateful for today. 2. Whenever you feel sad, mad, or nervous, write down the Automatic Negative Thoughts (ANTs) you have. Odds are these are telling you lies that scare you into feeling bad. 3. Get at least seven hours of sleep every night. Get an extra hour of sleep one day per week. 4. Limit your alcohol intake to no more than three “normal size” drinks per week. 5. Get rid of caffeine, nicotine, and aspartame from your diet. 6. On a piece of paper, write out your goals (relationships, career, financial, and health) and ask yourself everyday, “Does my behavior fit my goals?” 7. For one week, obtain all your calories from the following food groups: (No Cheating!) • Protein: Salmon, chicken, turkey, eggs, tofu and soy products, low-fat dairy, beans, nuts/seeds. • Carbs: Berries, oranges, cherries, broccoli, oats, whole wheat germ, red peppers, spinach, tomatoes, yams. • Fats: Avocados, olive oil, olives, and nut butter. • Liquids: Water, green or black tea. 8. Touch others (appropriately) twice as much as usual. The brain craves affection! 9. The brain is 80% water – drink more water today to remain well hydrated. 10. Eat less, live longer. Reasonable calorie restriction is good for the brain1. If you want to laugh more, make the right financial decisions, remember the lyrics to your favorite song, and find your deodorant in the medicine cabinet instead of the refrigerator, take care of your brain! “Making a Good Brain Great” by Dr. Daniel G. HOW OFTEN DO I NEED A PAP SMEAR? According to new guidelines from the American Society for Colopscopy & Cervical Pathology, as of April 2013, women between the ages of 21-65 who have had previously normal pap smears should have a pap smear every three (3) years. Exceptions apply to women with immune system dysfunction, such as HIV. IF I’M PLANNING ON STARTING A FAMILY, WHAT VACCINES SHOULD I GET? A recent change in the last two years from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, now recommends that women get a whooping cough vaccine (Tdap) in the third trimester of each pregnancy. This helps to protect the baby with the mom’s immunity cells. In infants, whooping cough can be very dangerous. WHAT’S A NORMAL LEVEL FOR MY CHOLESTEROL? Instead of focusing on cholesterol levels (numbers), new guidelines issued by the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology in late 2013 direct doctors to treat cholesterol according to your risk for heart disease. A calculation includes your age, family history of heart disease, among other factors. Cholesterol-lowering medications are recommended for persons between 40 and 75 years of age who have an estimated 10-year risk of cardiovascular disease of 7.5 percent or higher. DO I NEED TO START HAVING BREAST MAMMOGRAM SCREENINGS AT 40 OR 50? Recommendations on how often to have a mammogram differ. The American Cancer Society recommends every year for women 40 or older, as long as she is in good health. On the other hand, the U.S. Preventative Services Task Force suggests every two years for women between the ages of 5074. Starting screenings at a younger age, the USPSTF recommends that individuals take into account benefits and risks. For women 75 and older, the USPSTF suggests that there is insufficient evidence to recommend screenings. “MUCH HAS CHANGED SINCE I STARTED MY MENSTRUAL CYCLE. WHAT KIND OF ADVICE CAN I GIVE MY DAUGHTER, AND WHAT ARE SOME THINGS THAT I CAN EXPECT AS I ENTER MENOPAUSE?” Our daughters should expect pelvic exams after the age of 21 to be part of their health care routine. Acne may also be part of puberty, adolescence, and post-adolescent years, and can be treated. Finally, with bone mass beginning to decline around age 35, your daughter will want to preserve her bone health through bone strengthening exercises and good diet. As for mom, symptoms of menopause—hot flashes, vaginal dryness, and mood changes— typically start four to five years prior to the onset of the last menstrual cycle. Menopause is determined if a woman stops menstruating for one year; if vaginal bleeding persists, she should seek medical help.

Make Me Over

WRITTEN BY ANGELICA LOPEZ, AMERICAN GYPSY JEWELRY

SUMMER IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER, AND I CAN FEEL IT IN MY BONES. Maybe it was the tease of our mild winter along the coast that has left us craving more sun and warmer weather, while the rest of the country is still trying to thaw out. I feel now, more than ever, ready to ditch the winter layers in exchange for some spunky spring/summer style! The fashion forecast for spring/summer 2014 is looking fun, flirty, but most of all fresh. Displaying not only the predictable feminine florals that leave us unimaginatively dressing for spring year after year, we now have the opportunity to mix it up. Designers are combining classic pieces with cultural fashions, athletic-inspired themes with flashy metallics, and flirtatious pops of pink with an edgy twist. This year anything goes, so break out of your shell. It is time to have fun with fashion! Culturally themed fashion is a huge trend for this spring and summer. Cross-continental style was spotted popping up all over the runways from Donna Karan’s African elements to Valentino’s multi-cultural embellishments. This ever-present tribal-revival theme is so wearable for our bohemian coastal community. The major components of this season’s bohemian-rhapsody look consists of beaded trim, gold embellishments, touches of ethnic fabrics and prints, and, of course, fringe! This theme is all about the ebb and flow of bohemian fashion that is so casually thrown together; however, it is even more about the mix up and the effortlessness that it took in creating this multi-faceted look. Start with the basics — a pair of jeans, a classic white top — and add elements. Creating cultural style may be easiest when starting with accessories. Try throwing on a great statement necklace with your basic canvas of jeans and a tee, and keep building from there. Try adding a great pair of neutral sandals with bold stitch-work or ethnic flare. This look is all about the add-ons. Seek out something culturally different and pair with the basics. You will look bohemian chic in no time. Warm weather is on the horizon and it is time to shine! Metallics have been relevant in fashion for countless seasons, but for spring/ summer 2014 they are back with a vengeance. Designers along the likes of Diane Von Furstenberg, Altuzarra, Jason Wu, and Lanvin all incorporated a lethal dose of metallic shine into their spring 2014 collections. They are now showing metallics suitable for day or night. Try pairing your metallic look-du-jour with another fresh spring trend, urban athleticism. Designers are borrowing inspiration from sports, with tennis-skirt pleats popping up all over the runways. Perforated fabrics are another huge trend this spring season. They fall perfectly into the category of urban athleticism by mimicking the fabric of a sports jersey and give a lighter, more airy feel to a thicker fabric. Whether you are running around with the kids, hanging with family and friends, or attending a fabulous event, with these simple tips you will be sure to step into spring and summer with style!

S hades

of Summer

BY BRITTANY ADAMSON FOUNDER QUATTRA VIA SALON AND SPA

SUMMER IS A PERFECT TIME TO EXPERIMENT WITH HAIR! This is the season that evokes moods of positivity and happiness everywhere you look: drinks at sunset, late-night dinners, afternoons at the beach, and weekend getaways. These are all good incentives to make some changes to your hairstyle and makeup routines. When was the last time you got a compliment on your look? If you think to yourself, “not lately”, get excited to embrace the glowing looks of purity in this season’s trends. You may just find a few compliments coming your way. Looking for a hair color change? I've got the hottest hues for every shade! Fiery red is one of this season’s most sought-after shades. You may think red only works with porcelain skin, but you’d be surprised by its versatility. If you’ve been pondering a drastic change to your do, take the leap and try an amber, copper, or fiery red. Newly colored red heads, I suggest you use Aveda’s miracle working Madder Root shampoo and conditioner, which was voted best shampoo for redheads at the 2013 Hair Awards. This product works by restoring warmth to chestnut, auburn, and red hair. For all of you natural blonde babes—icy blonde is the rage! It’s a perfect way to change from your natural blonde shade to one with reflection and vibrancy. Maintaining a color this light requires regular trims and moisturizing treatments to keep the look fresh. For the notso-natural or darker blondes, strawberry-blonde waves are spring/ summer perfection. This is one of my favorite hair colors ever. Ask your stylist for a semi-permanent color so you can have all the fun with none of the commitment. If you’re a brunette bombshell, don’t feel left out of the trends for

26 | North County Woman Spring/Summer 2014

summer. If you thought warm, burnt-orange shades were just for autumn, think again! Closing the gap between honey and caramel shades is massive this season. A glossy, auburn hue is stunning and looks gorgeous in the sunshine. Adding slightly lighter, warm tones through the ends of your brunette locks is also a great way to make your hair summer ready. Natural brunette is also back making effortless, low-maintenance hair cooler than ever! A super-light brunette hue is another spring/summer winner. Let your sun-bleached tips do their thing for a natural take on the ombré trend, and enhance your look by adding a high-shine gloss. Looking for a fresh summer cut? The medium-length bob is summer’s go-to cut. This style allows for all-day wear. Freshen up with just a tousle or two and some texture spray, and you can go from day to night without a hint of struggle. Keep cool all summer long with this easy, breezy style. For shorter styles we are seeing a lot of wispy, textured fringe that tapers through the back. A mini-mohawk with glossy waves is a great way to add a touch of glamour. This hairstyle is very versatile and can be adjusted for any occasion. Be creative and have fun with it! Of course, long waves will always be beautiful and trendy. Get a trim and add some long layers for a refreshed look. Healthy hair is always in style. Maybe you’re not brave enough to cut your hair or change the color but would like to wear your hair in a different way. A couple of risk-free changes that you can do yourself include the fishtail braid or the triplebraided bun. The fishtail adds a new twist to the original braid and is an unexpected way to add a pop of fun. The triple-braided bun is very simple but ultra-unique. Simply divide your hair into three equal

sections, braid each section, massage the braid for texture and then wrap it around itself and pin into place, and repeat with the other two braids and fasten them at the nape of the neck. Ta-da – you have a triple-braided bun! The three-tiered, high ponytail is another easy hit. A lot of famous celebrities have been spotted with this Pocahontas ponytail in the past few months, and I am loving it! If you feel the same way about this look, then today is the day to make it your own. Gather all your hair to the top of your head, secure, and wrap a piece of hair around the base to cover the hair tie, and pin. Tease the middle section of the ponytail to add texture and height, and secure a clear, elastic band below your textured poof and then one more band an inch to two inches down depending on length of hair. Looking for a more romantic look? If so, soft vintage waves or mermaid waves is the right hairstyle for you. Using a wand curling iron, alternate directions of curl and then softly brush for flawless beauty. Totally glamorous and always trendy, these waves are a safe option for any kind of occasion! Raw, natural beauty is this season’s hot look. Fresh faces with soft pink or peach lips and minimal contouring or definition defines this look. Load up on the mascara, but keep the rest simple with a dewy complexion and subtle pink under tone. You can choose to add a bright pop of color to the lips, but keep the rest simple. The season screams for pretty pastels and earth tones. Check out Aveda’s Culture Clash collection, which is sure to flatter any look with the perfect summer hues. Now…ready, set, and style your way to a summer worth remembering! It is the best time of year, so get started! (You can thank me later!)

 Decor | MAJESTIC PURPLE

Majestic Purple, the Color of Wealth, Royalty and Prosperity WRITTEN AND PHOTOGRAPHED BY DENISE VAKILI

AS SUMMER IS UPON US, EXTRA DOWN TIME ALLOWS FOR FOCUS ON OUR MOST PRIZED ENVIRONMENT THAT GOES BEYOND JUST A HOUSE, CONDO OR APARTMENT -- OUR HOME. Color is back with a vengeance and designers and architects alike have been utilizing one of this year’s most popular colors, purple, to create amazing spaces in a multitude of styles. If you’re ready to step out from basic neutrals, purple can be a happy and cheerful influence in your home. A majestic color, purple has often been referred to as the color of wealth, royalty and prosperity and represents a renaissance of sorts. In this Aviara home in Carlsbad, Georgene Scholey, interior designer with Carras Designs, incorporates purple in a modern design bringing a collection of transitional modernness together with a hint of whimsy. Adding the whimsy are the dining room light fixture, artwork and accents. The chandelier by Varaluz, Fascination Series, features gorgeous colored glass scatters in warm hues of gold, terracotta and red to diffuse the light. Ideal for this space and in many scenarios, Scholey integrated neutral grays for the sofa and chair, which make for easy transition to other color schemes simply by changing accent colors. In the dining room, the chairs were covered in a durable Sunbrella fabric, perfect in the event of spills, due to it’s washability. Continuing the modern feel, the flooring in this space are 12 x 24 porcelain tiles in cool and warm grays, resembling marble. Additionally, the whimsical shag rug adds nice texture and contrast with the uniquely shaped coffee table in faux shagreen (stingray skin) by Gabby Home. Looking to update beyond your neutral color scheme? Try purple in your home for a refreshing, updated look!

How to Get Ahead in Business With Golf ! The Stats Don’t Lie…Golf is Good for Business!

TIME AND TIME AGAIN, STATISTICS SHOW THAT PLAYING GOLF MAKES A DIFFERENCE IN THE BUSINESS WORLD AND ANY WOMAN AIMING FOR A SENIOR MANAGEMENT POSITION CAN'T AFFORD NOT TO PLAY. It’s a game that may take a little investment upfront, but will pay dividends forever. According to Jenn Harris, founder of High Heel Golfer, “Golf makes a huge difference for women in the business world because golf…… • Provides access to an environment where business deals are done • Challenges women to go beyond their comfort zone for personal enrichment • Instills confidence both on and off the course • Gives insight on how to read others • Offers you a sneak peek into the integrity and ethics of your golf partners • And most important…it lets you open up and have fun!” STATISTICS: • Executives who play golf make 17% more than those who don’t • 54% of business professionals see golf as the perfect networking tool, only 8% selected football • An estimated 90% of Fortune 500 CEO’s play golf • Sandra Day O’Connor, Cameron Diaz, Vera Wang, Celine Dion and Condoleezza Rice are all avid golfers • 50% of golfers agreed to the statement, "The way a person plays golf is very similar to how he or she conducts business affairs." On Monday, June 16, 2014, Connected Women of Influence and High Heel Golfer are bringing a unique, one day event together

at the prestigious Morgan Run Resort & Club for professional women in San Diego. The event is “Tee Off For Success: How to Get Ahead in Business With Golf.” According to Connected Women of Influence CEO & Co-Founder Michelle Bergquist, “This event brings together a unique combination of peer networking, relationship building and golf instruction for women to further advance themselves in business.” Don’t’ be confused, as this event is NOT a golf tournament. According to Bergquist, “Our event is designed for women to learn about golf for business in a fun, professional environment, since so many women want to play golf but are hesitant to get on the golf course and start playing. We’re trying to make the event fun and professional with a learning component to get more women on the golf course….and to showcase how executive women use golf to get ahead in business!” Hosted again for their 2nd year, founders Bergquist and Harris share that this event is not a golf tournament, but a unique event that includes activities and opportunities for both the beginner and the advanced golfer. The day includes breakfast, networking among peers, golf instruction and a golf workshop. For the more avid golfers, attendees can participate in a 9-hole scramble. Raffle prizes and vendors make the day interactive and fun for women in business. The event wraps up with a luncheon panel by local female executives who will share how they use golf to get ahead in business. So, if you’re ready to get ahead in business…or know someone who wants to get ahead in business, grab a girlfriend (or two) as it’s time to learn how golf can accelerate your career or business! Event registration is available online at www. TeeOffForSuccessSD.com or call 800-591-1673 for more information. Sponsorships and exhibitor tabletops are also available.

APRIL SHOWERS BRING MAY FLOWERS AND SO MUCH MORE LIKE: TAXES, SPRING BREAK, EASTER DINNER, SUMMER VACATION PLANNING, FAMILY VISITING, KIDS STUDYING FOR EXAMS, AND THE STRANGE FEELING THAT IT’S SUDDENLY TIME TO CLEAN YOUR HOUSE!

Mara Hoover, the Magnetic Money Mentor, is on a mission to empower women to gain financial literacy, eliminate guilt and move forward in life with a plan that works. Founder of FemmePowerU & FinancialPowerU, Mara is passionate about empowering women and entrepreneurs to find fulfillment and financial freedom on their terms.

Welcome to spring! Don’t be surprised if it also causes you to feel slightly overwhelmed. It’s time to come out of hibernation (a funny joke for us Southern Californians) and get things done. I encourage you to take a deep breath, make a list and check things off one at a time, celebrating each little win along the way. These little wins can be celebrated in our financial lives as well. I’ve found that when the “spring cleaning bug” sets in, the tendency to clean shows up in all areas of our lives: home, closet, calendar, and finances. Now is a great time to review the financial goals you set at the beginning of the year and check to see if you are on track. Whether you did or didn’t set those goals, this is the perfect time to tune in to your ideal financial picture. Here are five quick tips to get your money in tiptop shape this spring: 1. Goals and Dreams: Take a few moments to discover or remember why you are working so hard. What is it that you want to accomplish in your life? What do you most enjoy? Are you on track to accomplish those things? Are you enjoying life? An assessment of your goals reminds you of what’s important and gets you in the right frame of mind. Note: If you are married or in a serious relationship be sure to include your partner in this exercise. 2. Reality Check: Are your savings and spending plans (i.e.: budget) on point for what you’d like to accomplish? • Savings: Once you’ve reviewed your goals and what’s important to you, check and see if your progress toward your savings goals are on track and aligned with your life goals. No savings plan? This is a great time to create one. Be sure you’ve got your bases covered with at least three savings categories: emergency fund, short-term savings, and

32 | North County Woman Summer/Spring 2014

retirement savings. • Spending: When’s the last time you did a check-up on what’s going out the door? A great way to clean up your savings habits and make sure they are on point with your goals is to track your spending. Carry a note book around and write down every penny you spend for at least a week, a month is ideal. • Budget: Review your budget and see if you are on track. If you don’t have one, use what you’ve learned about your spending and saving habits to create a plan that will help you reach your goals from step one. 3. Taxes: Take the time to review your taxes from the last few years. Pay attention to things like your income (did it grow?),write offs, expenses, and overall taxes paid. Are you consistently getting a refund or having to pay at the end of the year? Talk to a tax professional to see how you can balance that out; ideally there should be no taxes due or refunds. 4. Investments: Many American’s have been avoiding opening their retirement account statements, sometimes for years! If this is you, take the necessary steps to find out where your accounts are, the balances, and then be honest with yourself as to whether the growth and risk potential are in alignment with what you want to accomplish. 5. Share the wealth: If you have children, find creative ways to get them involved with this process: teach them how to ask the right questions and set goals for themselves. Share this with friends, family, younger siblings, or even your parents. Once you’ve “spring cleaned” your money, others will want your help and support. The most important part of spring cleaning your finances is to get clear about where you are today, compare that to where you want to be in the future, and create a plan to get you there! If you are not on the right track, that’s okay; just figure out what steps you can take to align yourself with your goals and dreams from Tip 1 and take the first step. No matter where you are on the road to your goals the most important step is to be nice to yourself! No more guilt! Celebrate every little win along the way and join me in every issue for more great money tips.

Real Secrets Science of An Entrepreneur: Eight Fail-Safe Strategies to Ensure You Succeed Real Results

BY LIZ GOODGOLD, RED FIRE BRANDING

HAVING BEEN IN BUSINESS FOR MORE THAN 20 YEARS AND COACHING OVER 222 FEMALE ENTREPRENEURS, I KNOW THAT RUNNING YOUR OWN BUSINESS IS TOUGH WORK. BUT, IT’S BEYOND REWARDING AND I WOULDN’T DO IT ANY OTHER WAY.

Over the great highs and extreme lows of my business life, I’ve learned these eight essential lessons on the road to success: Third-party clinical trials show that NeriumAD dramatically reduces • Create a Revenue Model – You might have women it’s hard to tout our success, but no the appearance of: heard “follow your passion” as the key to one cares more about your success than entrepreneurial success, but it’s moot if you you! Master how to talk about yourself • Fine lines and wrinkles don’t have a way to make money doing without sounding like a boorish prig. After 17 days of using NeriumAD • Discoloration what you love. Let me be clear: have at • Stay Flexible – It’s OK to start out in least 3 different ways you will profit from • Uneven skin texture one direction and morph into another. your passion. Sometimes the world isn’t yet ready • Enlarged pores • Stay True To One Niche – It’s easy to get for you or vice versa. Heck! I remember swayed go broad preaching about employee branding in • Aging to or loose skin so that you don’t turn away business, but a specialty earns you 1999 and I just couldn’t gain traction; expertise status, client loyalty, premium no one was interested so I focused on pricing, and theisopportunity become and corporate branding. It has helped with my skin problems. for example, only financial branding talks fast enough! Mytalks poresabout are looking better, too.” planning; she doesn’t venture outside • Remain Authentic – Do you remember – Evelyn, TX of her sphere and neither should you. discovering that Lonely Girl 19 on the • Develop a Pricing Strategy – You don’t need a Ph.D here, but you do need to pay attention to how you will charge. Are you willfully overcharging for attention? Is your pricing logical? Is it easy? For example, I remember charging different prices for my different audio CDs. When I figured out that even my mom couldn’t keep the prices straight, I stole a page from Apple’s iTunes store that initially offered every song for just $.99; I quickly went to a simple flat fee for all my audio products and made my customers (and my mom) happy. • Don’t Listen to Naysayers- Remember hearing stories about friends who often sabotage weight loss success? Well, the same analogy applies in business. Meanspirited friends and colleagues might see your success as their loss; don’t let them! Eschew naysayers now and find true advisers who truly want you to succeed. • Toot Your Own Horn – Yep, sometimes as

Internet wasn’t lonely at all, but a paid actress? Or that Wal-Mart paid for favorable blogs treating us with the term flogging? If so, you’ll note that each of these brands violated the first rule of branding: remain authentic. Don’t pretend to be somebody you’re not. It’s OK if your clients know you have children or that you drink wine. Letting your true personality show through is the key to a successful business and life. • Write Fast, Short, and Often – Today’s Attention Deficit Disorder world demands shorts bursts of useful information. In other words, you can’t afford to spend four hours on a blog! Yet, you must blog and Tweet in sexy sound bites that are quotable. Either seize the day to hone your writing or find a copy editor – now! • Brand Out – Fading into the sea of similarity is a fast track to failure. Pharrell Williams has adopted a unique name and spelling as a way to nab attention. Larry King would never be caught on TV without his trademark suspenders, and Rachel Ray has taught us the power of EVOO (Extra Virgin Olive Oil). How will you stand out?

It's the Second Quarter of 2014...How's it Going? BY CHARLIE MARTIN, THE CLARITY COACH

WE STARTED OUR CONVERSATION IN 2014 WITH THE GOAL OF MAKING 2014 YOUR BEST YEAR EVER. Are you on track? Did you define the WHYS for your goals to help make them stick and get started? Are you still on top of it? I hope your answers to these three questions are yes, yes and yes. In case you have had some drift in trying to achieve your goals, it’s never too late to get back on track. Have you seen the quote “The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago; the second best time is today”? It’s never too late to re-boot and re-focus. Right now, as you are reading this article, is the only opportunity you have to take action and start moving toward your big dreams. You will never have this day again. As I work with clients, we always look at goal setting and achievement as two separate pieces. The first part is setting clear goals and measurement systems. Good goals must meet the SMART test. They must be: • Specific: They must be stated in a clear, concise manner so there can be no doubt about what you are trying to accomplish. • Measureable: There must be a clear way to measure success. You must be able to understand when you have achieved your goal. • Achievable: Your goals must be achievable. They should not be things that are easy or impossible, they should be things that are meaningful to you and require you to stretch. • Relevant: If these are personal goals they must be important to your overall feelings of self-worth, and if they are business goals they must contribute to the achievement of the overall company goals. • Time Sensitive: There must be time lines, completion dates, etc. The second part of the two-part process is action planning. Even if you have developed SMART goals nothing will happen without the action plans to support the achievement of the goals. Action plans are the small steps that you must take and when you must take them to achieve each of your goals. The steps to developing your action plans are: • Review your goals and the related timelines and clarify your priorities. They are probably not equally important to you. • Define the small steps you will need to take and when you will need to start to take action to achieve your highest priority goal in the timeframe you have defined. • Record all of the steps you will need to take and the timing of each step to achieve the defined goal so you will have a written road map to follow. • Act on your plan. Start now and follow all the steps and you will achieve your goal. If you clearly defined your WHYS in the last quarter, but didn’t quite get started due to all those distractions we talked about, now is the time! Revisit your WHY’s, create your SMART goals, develop your action plans, and make it happen.
